The Edge
The Edge
Architect Louis H. Sullivan memorably wrote that “form follows function”. Here is a box where the form dictated the function.
Found in a New Mexico canyon and brought home: a derelict oak log. Intrigued, I sliced and cleaned it up, to reveal spalted oak grain of interesting patterns and shapes, one of which could be a live edge box lid. It was clear that this serendipitous find would dictate the form of the entire piece.
Asymmetry is the noteworthy outcome of this design exercise. Aligned edge detailing completes the overall effect. Rather than imposing a design upon the wood, I allowed the wood to dictate to me what it wanted to become.
The Edge. 11” long x 4” wide x 2” tall. Spalted Oak lid, Imbuia box. Cork lined bottom.
